Sometimes I laugh when I hear the nature vs nurture debate about whether boys and girls are really wired differently, or if it's just their upbringing that encourages them to associate with a certain gender. As soon as Jace developed a personality it was 100% all boy, there was no influencing him at all. Tate always jokes that I shouldn't do too many "girly" things with Jace, like bake cookies for example. Here are a few pictures I snapped while Jace and I baked cookies the other day... and then a few videos taken the next day. As you can see from the videos he is already quite the man, despite the fact that he loves to bake cookies with mommy... in the first he is tooting and playing with his goods in the bath tub, and in the second he is jumping on furniture and sticking out his tongue. On a side note, the chair that he loved to climb on has since been put back in storage, leaving it in our living room while we waited for furniture seemed like a good idea at first... but he never tired of jumping on it and tipping it over, so out it went!

| Yay, no eggs = yummy batter tasting! |

Such a dedicated baker, he had to make sure the chocolate
chips tasted ok before being put into the precious batter! |

Umm... "No! Hot!" doesn't work after he's already
touched it and realized it doesn't get hot. |

| Can't you see the joy on his face?! Waiting for cooling... |

| Mmmm... best cookies ever! |

I totally thought maybe it was nurture, but we didn't really introduce many "boy toys" until he showed a desire for them... right away, Owen was all about trucks! Still is! He will look at a baby doll but has none of that nurturing vibe that the little girls have.
Your cooking looks fun! I usually have Owen make fake food (like stirring a bunch of random crap in the bowl), but I guess maybe its time to see if his manners have gotten good enough for helping with real cooking
Yea, Alison you should definitely try real food with Owen! Jace has alot of fun with it and I find that it doesn't actually get that messy because he's so careful not to spill and waste some! Also, Oat Chippers are my favorite cookies to make (not only because they're dairy free and easy to substitute out the egg) but because there's a low amount of flour and sugar. They're mostly oats... so I don't feel bad about him enjoying a couple!
Next week we're going to try sugar cookies instead so that we can roll them out and use cookie cutters. I'm hoping he enjoys making shapes!
oooh, can I get the recipe?
Oat Chippers-
Dry ingredients:
1/2 cup flour
3/4 tsp baking soda
3 cups oats (old fashioned make them crunchier, instant make them chewier... I prefer crunchy!)
Wet ingredients:
3/4 cup oil
1/2 cup brwn sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs (which I omit if making for Jace and replace with mixture of honey, applesauce, mashed banana, and baking powder)
Combine dry in one bowl, wet in another, then combine together and mix. Add in 1/2 cup chocolate chips (more or less if you want) and mix.
Drop on greased cookie sheet and bake at 325 for about 10-12 minutes. Cookie should brown slightly and be crunchy and chewy at the same time :)
thanks! we don't have any chocolate chips but maybe I will make them with raisins. yum.
What are the proportions of honey, applesauce, banana, and baking powder per egg? I know some kids who are off dairy completely and whose parents would love this recipe.
Kirsten- I'm not much of a measuring person so it's really just trial and error. I just thought of what eggs are used for in cookies and they help the cookie raise and hold together, and they also add moisture. So for this recipe that calls for two eggs I usually use about half a banana mashed, one serving size of applesauce, a teaspoon of honey, and about 1/4 teaspoon baking powder. They won't turn out as good, obviously, but kids love them anyways. Also it's harder to tell when they're done because without eggs they don't really "brown" so it's easy to overcook them without noticing. Hopefully that helps!
Thanks for the extra detail. I made the cookies with the boys after nap time and I was a little unsure of how they'd turn out since the dough wasn't easily forming into balls, but when they came out of the oven, they tasted good! I used a whole banana instead of banana and applesauce and added a teaspoon of cinnamon.
